Born in 1871 in British Columbia, artist Emily Carr was most heavily influenced by the First Nations cultures of BC and Alaska. Having visited the Nuu-chah-nulth community of Ucluelet in 1898, she began to paint the totem poles of the coastal native tribes. The conservative Canadian culture of the time largely ignored Emily's work and she remained under-appreciated by the greater art world for many years. It has only been in the last 25 years that the significance of her painting has made its mark. This is a story about Emily's discoveries. Suitable for students between Grades 4 - 8 Touring April 5 - May 15 2008 This show can be booked on the same day as "The Ugly Duckling" |
